Glass in the work place Regulation 14 explained 16/02/10

Are you aware that your glazing may be illegal in some areas? Since 1996 the Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations, Regulation 14 makes it mandatory that every window “shall be of safety material or be protected against breakage”, where necessary for reasons of safety or health.

The approved code of practice for Reg. 14 states that any glazing from floor level to waist height (800mm) in walls and partitions, and shoulder height (1500mm) in or near doors should be of Safety Glazing to standard BS6206 Part 4.

Georgian wired glass in many cases does NOT meet the new requirements and should be checked as all other glass.

If you have not complied with Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations and an injury is sustained at your work place you could be prosecuted.

There are two options open to you:

1. Replace all the glass
This usually means a complicated and expensive job of taking out all of the old glass, probably having to build and install new frames with wider rebates and replacing these panes with expensive toughened or laminated glass. This is likely to be disruptive to your business which further increases your costs and inconveniences you and your staff.

2. Apply Plain or Printed DigiGlass Safety Window Film
You can meet Regulation 14 by having Safety Window film applied to your existing glazing with the bare minimum of fuss and little or no disruption. Our films have been tested by BSI and pass BS6206 Classes A,B & C as a safety glazing material. These films are already protecting the personnel and premises of many well known companies, organisations and authorities. Clear, opaque, tinted or reflective window films are available to give added benefits such as safety manifestations, privacy, solar protection against glare and heat, and to match your building aesthetically.
